Paint Color: It's Only a Name!
Fri, 03 Feb 2012 17:33:50 -0600
A couple of years ago after an inspiring visit to the island of Santorini in Greece, I decided to go online to find a paint color that would help me recreate, in my own home, the saturated blue of the domed church roofs the island is famous for. But I was disappointed to find out that not all "Santorini Blues" are really, "Santorini Blue", and so I wondered, did the paint companies ever do any travelling or specific research to find out what color they were naming paint chips after? The answer is, most often not.

Transform Your Home With Country Farmhouse Furniture
Fri, 03 Feb 2012 14:51:54 -0600
"Of all modern notions, the worst is this: that domesticity is dull. Inside the home they say is dead decorum and routine, while outside is adventure and variety. The truth is that the home is the only place of liberty, the only spot on Earth where a man can alter arrangements suddenly, make an experiment or indulge in a whim. The home is not the one tame place in a world of adventure, it is the one wild place in a world of rules and set tasks."

What Is So Special About Porcelain Floor and Wall Tiles?
Fri, 03 Feb 2012 14:09:12 -0600
Porcelain tiles have many advantages over stone tiles. The process of making porcelain is different to the process used to make standard ceramic tiles, one of the main benefits is that porcelain tiles have one of the hardest finishes; this means that they are extremely durable and non absorbent. This means that they are very little maintenance, unlike other natural products. It's becoming more and more difficult to tell the difference between porcelain and natural products as the technology and techniques used to make them are constantly improving...

Outdoor Or Indoor Palm Trees Make For Lovely Decor
Fri, 03 Feb 2012 12:43:15 -0600
Palm trees are an especially elegant addition to the decor of both the garden and the interior or a house. Though many people believe that palm trees are tender and need much pampering, many of them are surprisingly hardy. Though its true that many palms are tropical plants, some can even live outdoors in places where a few winter days can dip below freezing. One of the more cold hardy palms for example, is the blue or dwarf palmetto palm. A gardener who lives in the northeastern United States, for example, will have to protect their palm from cold weather.

Smoke Detectors Take Flight
Friday, February 03, 2012

Chick-A-Dee Smoke Detector ImageWe all know that safety should be the top priority in every home and smoke detectors are a must - but they're ugly, right? Not necessarily. The Chick-a-Dee smoke detector was developed through a Dutch design contest aimed to raise awareness of fire hazards in the home. It was originally intended for children's rooms but it could be really fun in a lot of different spaces.  What's also different is that it doesn't make that awful screaming sound of most smoke detectors. At the first sign of smoke the bird starts chirping and as the threat becomes more serious it gets louder and makes a "dee-dee-dee sound", alerting you to danger..

Up until now it's only been available online but it's recently been approved by the Canadian and US markets and should be in stores this month. Cute, no?

Object of Affection ? Zebra Lampshade
Wednesday, February 01, 2012

Shades of LightI always say that decorating is about the details, and one detail that often gets overlooked is the lampshade. Every time I go into a house that's full of plain, pleated lampshades I die a little bit inside. Not because they're ugly (although I personally don't care for them) but because they've been done to death. There are so many amazing options out there that there's no need to resort to the old standard. Take this zebra lampshade from Shades of Light for instance - it's stylish, sophisticated, and adds a bit of fun to just about any room.  Why go plain when you can go wild?

Decorating with Neutrals - It Doesn't Have to be Boring!
Monday, January 23, 2012

Neutral Living Room ImageAs much as I love color and as much as I encourage people to use color in their decorating, I also love the calm serenity of a beautifully decorated neutral room. I don't mean a room that's beige or cream just for the sake of being beige or cream - I mean a thoughtfully decorated, full of shapes, textures, and layers, beautifully thought out neutral room. It's really not that hard to achieve either. Check out this new article on decorating with neutrals on how to take your neutral room from frumpy to fabulous.

Creating a Home Everyone Can Enjoy
Sunday, January 15, 2012

Classic Living Room ImageA little while ago I went to the home of a designer colleague and I was disappointed with what I saw. It was beautiful in its own way (exceptionally styled, beautiful items, spotlessly clean) but it felt very empty and cold. This woman had two young children but there was no evidence of them anywhere in the home. It was a showpiece, plain and simple.

While this works for some people, it's not what I think of as a home to be lived in. As far as I'm concerned a home should be a comfortable place that brings a smile to your face every time you walk in the door - and every member of the family should feel welcome.

The experience prompted me to write this article - it's all about creating a clean and classic home that everyone can enjoy, no matter what your style.

Post Christmas Organizing
Wednesday, December 28, 2011

Outdoor Holiday Decorations ImageAnd so it came, and so it went. How can it be that Christmas is already over? I just put up all my decorations and I'm already thinking about putting them away. They'll probably stay up until January 1st and then the mass cleanup will begin. I vow this year to be organized so that next year when I open up all the Christmas boxes I won't be confronted with a jumbled mess. If you want to do the same check out this article on storing holiday decorations before you get started.
